(Invisible) Displays of Survivalist Intensive Motherhood among UK Brexit Preppers

This article explores mothers’ narratives of ‘prepping’ behaviours. Prepping involves the management stockpiled household items in anticipation marketplace disruption. In this article, we use anticipated food shortages following UK’s exit from EU (‘Brexit’) as our context. Drawing on interview data, highlight how mothers embed prepping into their ongoing pursuit intensive motherhood, bound highly gendered practice feeding family. While adhering to elements motherhood ideology (their actions are labour intensive/child centred), participants reveal a hidden element practice. We introduce notion ‘survivalist motherhood’ understand actions. Survivalist departs earlier studies due largely invisible nature preparations and trade-offs made feed family during resource scarcity.
